Introduction to School of Life Science and Food Engineering
The School of Life Science and Food Engineering offers three teaching departments: Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, and Food Science and Technology. It provides both undergraduate and master’s degree programs with a focus on academic and professional development. The School has five master's degree programs, including:
Academic Master's Degrees: Animal Science (primary discipline) and Livestock and Poultry Safety Production and Control (sub-discipline).
Professional Master's Degrees: Master of Agriculture (with specializations in Animal Husbandry, Food Processing and Safety) and Master of Veterinary Medicine.
The School offers 4 undergraduate programs: Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, Food Science and Engineering, and Food Quality and Safety. It has two first-class undergraduate programs, one first-class course recognized by Hebei Province, and two provincial-level courses on innovation and entrepreneurship. Additionally, one course is available online on the National Higher Education Smart Education Platform.Currently, the school has 1,062 undergraduate students and 316 graduate students enrolled.
The School currently has a faculty and staff of 83, including 11 professors, 18 associate professors, and 54 individuals with doctoral degrees. Notably, 95% of the faculty hold master's degrees or higher. Among its distinguished members are one expert who enjoys the State Council Special Allowance, one who receives the Hebei Provincial Government Special Allowance, and one who is recognized as a Hebei New Century "333 Talent." The School also boasts five outstanding professionals from Handan City, four experts in the third phase of the Hebei Provincial Modern Agricultural Industry Technology System, one “Hebei Good Person”, and two “ Young Stars of Hebei”. In addition, 6 faculty members have been awarded the prestigious Hebei Province Yanzhao Talent Service Card (A-level).
The School emphasizes industry-academia cooperation, leveraging comple- mentary strengths and resource sharing to build educational and research platforms that strongly support the training of versatile, application-oriented professionals. It has established 21 off-campus teaching and research practice bases in collaboration with companies such as Huayu Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd., Shijiazhuang Junlebao Dairy Co., Ltd., Hebei Jinkai Animal Husbandry Co., Ltd., and Hebei Provincial Institute for Drug Control, etc. Additionally, the School has constructed 7 provincial and municipal research platforms, including the Hebei Provincial Poultry Disease Technology Innovation Center and the Animal-derived Food Safety Testing Engineering Laboratory,etc. As of now, the School has collaborated with firms like Chenguang Biotechnology Group Co., Ltd. and Congtai Brewery Co., Ltd. to co-establish seven other provincial platforms, and it has created 76 graduate training bases with organizations such as the China Animal Disease Prevention and Control Center and Chenguang Biotechnology Group Co., Ltd.
In recent years, the School has been awarded 1 second prize and 3 third prizes in the Hebei Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards. It undertook two New Agricultural Science Research and Reform Practice Projects from the Ministry of Education and four provincial teaching and research projects. Faculty members have led over 100 research projects funded by national and provincial agencies, with over 30 receiving provincial or municipal scientific achievement awards. The School holds over 10 patents and has co-developed the “Rongde Black-feathered Miniature Egg Chicken” in collaboration with Hebei Rongde Poultry Breeding Co., Ltd., which has been recognized by the National Commission for Livestock Genetic Resources. Faculty members have published over 400 research papers, including one with an impact factor of 19.568. Additionally, the School has published 18 textbooks and monographs. The School actively collaborates with companies such as Tianjin Ringpu Biotechnology Co., Ltd., Hebei Animal Disease Prevention and Control Center, and Huayu Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. to offer technology services that contribute to regional economic development.
The School offers several scholarships, including National Scholarships, National Encouragement Scholarships, National Financial Aid, and the President’s Scholarship, with over 30% of students receiving various types of awards or financial assistance each year. The School has several student organizations, including the “Xin Shi Dai” Youth Volunteer Service Group, the “Pet Lovers Association,” and “Mei Shi Mei Ke.” The “Xin Shi Dai” volunteer activities have been featured in the Hebei Farmers’ Newspaper and the Hebei Youth League’s official social media, receiving praise from various sectors. Students of our school have won numerous awards in the “Internet Plus” College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the National Veterinary Medicine Skills Competition, the National Animal Science Skills Competition, and the National Food Engineering Practice Skills Competition. The students of our School have obtained four National College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program projects in the past five years, 10 Hebei Provincial projects, and 34 university projects. The students have also won 12 national and 20 provincial awards in academic competitions. The School is privileged to recommend outstanding undergraduate students for direct admission to master’s programs. In 2023, the postgraduate entrance rate is 32.7%, with 29.6% of these students admitted to prestigious institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Northwest A&F University, etc.
